Market movements - March 2026

Market movements – March 2026

In the past month, escalating conflict in the middle east delivered mixed signals for the Australian economy.

The RBA’s February statement highlighted how stronger than expected labour market outcomes and inflation has shifted future cash rate forecasts higher.

The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%, as wage growth continued to edge higher and household spending softened.

The Australian dollar strengthened to 0.71 USD at the end of February, achieving a three-year high. Plus, the ASX hit several record highs, supported by solid corporate results, even as global markets remained cautious.

Oil Price Volatility: What It Means for You

Oil Price Volatility: What It Means for You

Why oil prices have surged

You may have noticed recent headlines about global oil prices rising sharply. These movements are being driven by tensions overseas, changes in supply, and shifting expectations about the world economy. It’s completely understandable that this can feel concerning, but it’s important to remember that short‑term swings in oil prices are common and tend to settle over time.

Oil is one of the fastest‑moving parts of global markets, so prices can jump around quickly. Share markets often react to these moves — sometimes positively, sometimes negatively. While this can create brief periods of volatility, it doesn’t alter the foundations of a long‑term investment strategy.

Oil price changes can influence certain parts of the share market, particularly energy companies, and they can affect how investors feel about inflation or global growth. These reactions are usually temporary. What matters most is the structure of your overall portfolio, not the movement of one commodity.

What this means for your portfolio

Your portfolio is built to manage periods like this. It’s diversified across different types of investments and regions, which helps reduce the impact of any single event — including sudden changes in oil prices. This balance is designed to support your long‑term goals, not react to short‑term headlines.

Most importantly, your investment strategy is tailored to your needs, your timeframe, and your comfort with risk. A few weeks of market noise doesn’t change that.

If this news has raised any questions, or if you would simply appreciate reassurance, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re always here to talk things through and support you with calm, clear guidance.
