Market movements and review - February 2026

Market movements and review – February 2026

2026 kicked off with some encouraging signs but comes with a sting in the tail as global uncertainty continues to shake things up.

There was a surprise drop in unemployment to 4.1%, the number of jobs available increased, and household spending grew.

These elements have also contributed to persistently increasing inflation with the RBA announcing an increased cash rate of 3.85% earlier this month.

The S&P/ASX 200 climbed 1.8% in January, but there’s still ground to be made up to reach last October’s peak.

Global markets showed volatility due to geopolitical threats including the Trump administration’s rhetoric and actions on Iran, Venezuela and Greenland.

How cash-out recontribution works

A cash‑out recontribution strategy can be a powerful way to reshape the tax components inside your superannuation. By withdrawing a lump sum and recontributing it as a non‑concessional contribution, you can increase the proportion of your balance that sits in the tax‑free component.

For those thinking about how their super will be passed on, this can significantly reduce the potential tax paid by beneficiaries. The example provided shows how a strategic recontribution can shift the balance from 20% tax‑free to 52% tax‑free, potentially saving $33, 660 on estate tax. It’s a great reminder that thoughtful planning today can make a meaningful difference to your family’s future.
